University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration Building Renovation
Chicago, IL
At the University of Chicago, the original modernist steel and glass structure designed by Mies van der Rohe and built in 1965, houses classrooms, offices, research rooms, a lounge, public lobby, and a library to support the school’s functions. The projects design intent was to accommodate the changing demographics of ~450 students of which 80% are female and accommodate the special event needs held in the main lobby.
AltusWorks designed the renovation and expansion of restroom facilities, added a single user accessible toilet room on the main floor, and provided an accessible route from the exterior plinth, through the lobby and via an elevator to the basement in a way that honors the materials, scale, and modular nature of the Miesian architectural style.
