UIUC Ice Arena Feasibility Study

The UIUC Ice Arena, constructed in 1931 and designed by Holabird & Root in the Georgian Revival style, is a historic facility on the UIUC campus. After nearly a century of use, the building faces significant programming and deferred maintenance challenges. Following a student referendum in strong support of keeping the arena in operation at its current location, the Division of Campus Recreation is undertaking this feasibility study to evaluate the Ice Arena’s future and assess its ongoing viability.

Our study will address the Ice Arena’s mission, current space uses, and stakeholder program needs and will result in three conceptual design solutions: one for the rehabilitation of the existing facility and two for a potential new arena located elsewhere on campus. A prioritized rehabilitation plan will be developed to address roofing, masonry, window replacement, HVAC, fire protection, ice-making systems, electrical, accessibility, energy efficiency, and interior improvements.
