Stock Yard Bank Building Assessment and Stabilization
Chicago, IL
Building Envelope and Historic Preservation Consultant as part of a multi-disciplinary team to study and plan the rehabilitation of the 1924 Chicago Landmark designed by A. Epstein. The bank building has sat vacant since the last 1960’s.
AltusWorks advised on the treatment of interior historic spaces, performed an up-close assessment of the envelope, and provided façade restoration and stabilization recommendations for the brick and terra cotta clad concrete frame structure and its 4-story clock tower. Immediate stabilization of eminently hazardous counions was executed during the design phase based on the findings of an up-close assessment, destructive testing and document review.
Previous stabilization had removed much of the terra cotta ornament which was stored inside for future reinstallation or recreation. The plywood protection and other stabilization methods were reinforced and strategic areas emphasizing the tower were rebuilt, tuckpointed and cleaned to convey the future appearance of a fully restored edifice.
