Reynolds Club Black Box Theater Rehabilitation

Chicago, IL

On behalf of the University of Chicago, AltusWorks led the renovation of an existing 125 seat student black box theater and support spaces to accommodate the requirements of a new professional troupe, STAGE, a multi-media theatre collective which fosters collaboration between artists and scientists. The theater is located within an original social hall in the Reynolds Club Student Union Building, designed in 1903 by architects Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge.

AltusWorks coordinated a team of specialized consultants to address STACE’s requirements related to flexibility in performance area, acoustic attenuation, climate control and theater lighting along with interior finishes to suit the new experimental theater program requirements. Before settling on the dedicated climate control system and at the request of the University to think ‘outside the box’, AltusWorks recommended and performed a comprehensive study to determine viable options for whole building climate control.
