Museum of Science and Industry Envelope Restoration

Chicago, IL

As the gateway to the proposed Obama Presidential Center, the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) embarked on a significant restoration project not only as a good steward of the building but to also welcome their new neighbor to the south. The project builds upon previous repairs and completes the exterior restoration of the monumental Columbian Exposition structure.

The program included restoration of decorative limestone walls, parapets, limestone and terra cotta sculptural elements of the central pavilion; wings linking the east and west pavilions; and the entirety of the east and west pavilions including their Greek cross clerestory and dome drum; rebuilding of 3 monumental granite stairs and limestone-clad cheek walls; restoration of cast iron window framing, copper roofing, and painted cast iron doors and grilles. In addition to the historic materials, the 1991 north entrance sequence was renovated including removal and reconfiguration of entry kiosks storefront and canopy systems; new trench drainage to evacuate significant surface runoff and stormwater; repairs to planter walls, adjacent concrete walks, and parking structure retaining walls.

As the Preservation Architect, AltusWorks performed a detailed assessment of the conditions, prepared detailed technical documents, and collaborated with an esteemed restoration contractor, Berglund Construction, in execution of the work.
