Metra Highlands Station Rehabilitation

AltusWorks was engaged to provide Architectural and Engineering Design Services for the Pre-Design and Preliminary Design Phases for the rehabilitation of the historic Highlands Station, one of three commuter railroad stations in Hinsdale located along Metra’s BNSF Line. This effort aims to enhance the historic depot and shelter structures while upgrading the facility to meet current user needs and operational requirements.

As part of the rehabilitation strategy, recommendations were developed for structural repairs, water mitigation, interior and exterior restoration, and systems upgrades, including new heating, lighting, and electrical infrastructure. AltusWorks is also supporting compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Design documentation is being coordinated to align with the expectations of the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), Metra’s NEPA consultants, and the Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission, with the goal of preserving the station’s historic integrity while enabling continued operation and service.
