Metra 59th/60th Street Station Rehabilitation

AltusWorks is the Historic Preservation Consultant for Metra’s 59th/60th Street Station Rehabilitation project. Located just west of Chicago’s Jackson Park, the station has been in operation since the late 19th century, playing a key role in transporting visitors to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and continuing to serve the University of Chicago and surrounding neighborhood. Today, the station is undergoing rehabilitation to provide ADA accessibility and improve the passenger experience.

AltusWorks led the Section 106 review process, identifying nearby historic resources and assessing the project’s potential impact to them. Following a determination of adverse effect, AltusWorks collaborated with multiple agencies and stakeholders to develop the necessary Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), outlining measures to mitigate impacts on historic properties while supporting the project’s broader goals. With the Section 106 process resolved, AltusWorks continues to consult on the design and content of interpretive elements that will help share the station’s history with future riders.
