Bungalow by Middle Brow

Chicago, IL

Founded in 2011, Middle Brow Beer Co. took a significant step in the company’s development by opening its first brick-and-mortar space in 2018 – Bungalow, a 3,500-square-foot brewpub in the heart of Logan Square, just steps from CTA’s California Blue Line station.

Bungalow is housed in a long, narrow building that was previously home to a camera shop. AltusWorks, in collaboration with design architect Tumu Studio, transformed the space into something bright and airy – inspired by the idea of creating a dynamic place reminiscent of ‘your coolest friend’s apartment.’ The street façade constructed c. 1920 of sun-faded, red brick with glass-block filling original clearstory and door opening was maintained to propel the building’s unassuming presence; a speak-easy-inspired main entrance was created along the long side of the building, facing the future beer garden. The new facility was designed to house a production brewery, taproom, pizzeria, and coffee bar encouraging ‘all-day’ use. Large windows, vintage furniture, a marble bar, tall plants, skylights and an antique piano create an interior ambience that invites patrons to linger a bit longer.
