28 Mile Distillery

Highwood, IL

Developed by two serial entrepreneurs and located in the heart of Highwood’s restaurant row, 28 Mile Distillery offers their award-winning spirits at their art deco inspired tasting room, performance space, courtyard and rooftop deck.

AltusWorks led the talented design team including spatiality kitchen, lighting and landscape designers in the adaptation of an existing light manufacturing building and the adjacent defunct motel site into a mixed use complex anchored by the distillery but offering interior, garden and rooftop event space. With a new modern facade, the distillery and tasting room are on display from the street, attracting pedestrians into the speakeasy throwback.

Inspired by the hidden drinking establishments of the prohibition era and the vodka originally distilled by the Rose Miller (aka The Debonair), AltusWorks designed a cozy sophisticated tasting room where mixologists serve up craft cocktails, friends gather to catch up and enjoy a bite, and catch a band.
